PROGRAMS

Great Range Mountain Guides customizes each day to suit the needs of our guests. Periodically however we will offer programmed days with with a designed curriculum. If you are interested in one of the programs but can't make the date, consider booking a day through the Private Guiding option. Alternatively, sign up to be on our mailing list so we can let you know when the course will be offered again.

Intro to Rock Climbing

If the sport of rock climbing has you curious but you're not sure how to get started, this is a good option. After introductions and a briefing for the day, we'll head out to one of the many excellent cliffs in the High Peaks. Options include: King Phillips spring wall, Chapel Pond canyon, and Tilman's arete. Once at the site, we will go over climbing movement, belaying and tieing in, with the day focused on experiencing different styles of climbing and creating a solid basis of understanding for the vertical world.

Outdoor Rock Anchors and Systems

​​​The GRMG Anchor course is a two day course designed to help participants construct anchors using natural, fixed and removable protection. All participants should, at a minimum, have experience climbing routes of varying styles. Some of the anchors options that will be covered are single, two and three or more point anchor utilizing the rope and commonly carried materials like slings, cord and carabiners. Placing removable protection for anchors will be addressed as well as incorporating natural and fixed components.

The time will be spent in the field at a location that has many options for anchor construction, with the instructor demonstrating different techniques and configurations. This will be followed by guided practice, including potentially climbing on participant anchors.

Lead and Self-rescue Course

This course is designed for climbers that have experience with traditional single and multi-pitch routes and are looking to refine their gear placement and anchor construction abilities as well as expand their skill-set for those "what-if" scenarios in climbing.

The days will have a mix of focusing on leading (always with some form of backup) and rescue skills with an emphasis on discussion, demonstration and guided practice scenarios. Our goal for all participants, is that they leave feeling more aware of the responsibilities of being in the leader role and empowered to manage those responsibilities.

Backcountry Primer

The Backcountry Rock Climbing Primer course is a one day program aimed at helping people understand the many considerations and options that go into planning and executing a backcountry rock climb. All participants should be able to confidently follow 5.6 while removing traditional protection placed by a lead climber. Additionally, participants must be able to hike approximately 2 miles with 1500' of elevation gain.

The first part of the day will be spent discussing the above topics and more. After that, we'll pack for and execute a climb to put what was discussed into practice.

Single Pitch Instructor Course

The SPI program is a three day (27 hours) course that represents the benchmark for professional climbing instruction in the United States. The SPI course is for current, active rock climbers that have a desire to teach climbing in the single pitch setting and have been climbing for at least 12 months. The program is focused on teaching candidates to proficiently facilitate rock climbing experiences and provide professional level instruction and care.

American Mountain Guides Association 
Single Pitch Instructor Assessment

The AMGA Single Pitch Instructor Assessment is a two day program. Candidates are required to have completed the SPI course within two years before the Assessment. Upon successful completion of the program, candidates gain certification as an SPI for a period of three years. This credential is increasingly required to gain employment as a climbing instructor.
